What is high potential and gifted education?
Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
The Dobroyd Point Public School High Potential and Gifted Education Policy is designed to promote engagement, challenge, and optimal student growth, wellbeing, and achievement for all students, regardless of background. It recognises and supports potential across four key domains:
· Intellectual
· Creative
· Social-emotional
· Physical
The policy aims to support every student in achieving their full educational potential by providing targeted talent development opportunities and differentiated teaching and learning practices. These approaches ensure that each student’s unique learning and wellbeing needs are effectively met.
High potential and gifted students at Dobroyd Point Public School represent a diverse cohort across all ages, genders, and domains of potential. The school recognises that high potential can be found in students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
Some of Dobroyd Point Public School’s high potential and gifted students:
· come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and may experience language barriers
· are from disadvantaged backgrounds and may lack access to resources needed to fully develop their potential
· are neurodiverse and are supported through programs that both extend their strengths and provide appropriate adjustments for areas requiring additional support
· may be disengaged, withdrawn, or present with behavioural challenges, requiring targeted strategies to support their engagement and wellbeing.
Differentiation for high potential and gifted students at Dobroyd Point Public School, focus on key factors. Learning provides:

- adjustments across different areas
To further refine and add to existing measures to support high potential and gifted students at Dobroyd Point Public School, leaders will:
1. evaluate school processes, programs and practices using the High Potential and Gifted Education Policy Planning Tool.
2. build their capacity to best meet the needs of High Potential and Gifted students.
3. build teacher capacity to best meet the needs of these students.
4. collaborate with families, schools & the wider community around what high potential and Gifted Education is all about.
5. identify teachers’ skills across the 4 domains
6. assess and identify High Potential & Gifted Students
7. implement evidenced based programs to support students to facilitate talent development.
